Supposedly snorkels get you some benefits on dusty roads, so by that metric, it may have gotten use. May. It’s a CAI of sorts, anyway.

how much of a decrease in air flow restriction does it get?

In fairness, you’ll not gonna try and sell the car covered in mud are you?

I’d guess that it is used every time the Jeep is turned on, but I’m a pedantic asshole.

Not much restriction reduction, but not as much of an increase as you might think was possible - it *is* in a higher pressure area. The main thing is “colder”, but only if the engine’s tuning is capable of making use of that. The dusty roads thing being mildly cleaner air at that level.

i was thinking more that those tires/wheels would not hold up to a situation that a snorkel would be required. To me it looks like it was done to look like a badass offroader than to be a badass offroader

I doubt it’s seen anything more than a dirt road, I’d even think there is a chance it isn’t connected.

To get a full benifit, you need to have it facing backwards.

Of course, with a Series, the intake is nearly at the top of the firewall and nowhere near the front of the car anyway, so if you want to put a snorkel on one of those, the question arises “WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING”

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION:

I believe that the Wrangler (especially the current generation) is seen as a way for some men to dabble in metrosexuality without seeming less masculine. Some guys just wanna accessorize. Nothing wrong with that, not casting judgement against them, it’s just an observation. “Jeep” is now the Harley of the 4-wheeled conveyance.

Their jeeps never leave pavement, unless it’s a rare opportunity to drive across the grass at the kid’s school and park in an area where there’s more of a chance of slipping the tires and “accidentally” causing auto-4WD to kick in. They have 52” LED light bars they can’t use on the street, 37” tires with a fresh coat of ArmorAll tire shine, XD rims that look to weigh about as much as the vehicle they’re attached to, and steel bumpers that are at head level with pedestrian children.

Tires should be fine, wheels are questionable.

i’m very much function over form when it comes to vehicles. I mean, it all looks awesome, but I couldn;t do all this unless I intended on using it as such.

Exactly. And some guys are form over function, and that’s okay... but let’s just call a spade a spade here - they’re decorating.

lol i just noticed the lights by each mirror. kinda looks liek diamond earrings. I do some mountain biking at night. when i first started I had a handlebar mounted light which made things fairly difficult as the light source was visible out of the bottom of my field of vision. this made it kinda hard to see because my eye would adjust to that bright light. When I switched to a head lamp it was much easier as my eyes could adjust to the light level on the trial. I would think those lights would do the same thing and make it somewhat hard to see with a bright light source on either side of your vision.

Buys the jeep, moves to South Carolina, everyone laughs at him, then the whole area floods and he drives around for fun

I do know this, when Chrysler friends tested the JK with a snorkel kit on it for towing regulations, it actually helped because of the snorkel being outside the engine bay, it helps keep intake temp down a lot

That part I kind of figured, but you never know if an ECU is clever enough to make proper use of a CAI. Good to know in this case that it can. The more up in the air question is not whether it works as a CAI, but whether it cleans up intake air for dust much compared to down lower, which it very well might. There was also some Jeep not long ago that tended to dash water into its intake box when you drove it through puddles, but that may have been the Liberty. Regardless, that might be a reason to have a snorkel for driving in the wet even if you don’t intend to swim up to the windshield - if the airbox is in a bad place, it’s in a bad place.

P.J. O’Rourke had some funny sentiments on the Jeep along those lines in Driving Like Crazy , and broadly in favor of it - a purposeful-looking and seeming vehicle without purpose, and so on. He later wrote a bigger piece for Car & Driver along similar lines. Bottom line - it’s fun to accessorize.

Based on the wheel choice, probably never used for fording a stream.

I’ll totally admit that it’s fun to accessorize, except it’s way more fun to put those accessories to work.

I see no issue with that. Hell, I see no issue w/ accessorizing for sake of accessorizing.

Where it gets silly is when the overly-manly asshole attitude comes along with it. You like your Jeep, we get it; you don’t have to drive like a dick to prove it. Stop passing on the dirt shoulder because there’s a line of cars ahead of you. Yes, your wide-profile tires with off-road lugs makes it hard to handle on the freeway, that’s your problem, and its no excuse not to stay in your own damn lane. I know the differentials are geared for off-road, but if you’re going 50 on the freeway and/or 30 in the parking lot, you’re being a douchenozzle, knock it off.

#NotAllJeepDrivers, i know... but there are those.

LOL! That’s not how you make friends...

I own one of the “minor” Jeeps, and I saw a forum post today about one of my fellow owners passing a guy in a lifted Wrangler that found himself in a ditch on the side of the road. My friend’s Jeep has 4WD and a winch, and is definitely up to the task, and he offered to help pull the guy out.

But the asshole waved him off and said he’d rather wait for a “real” Jeep, while his “real” Jeep was stuck in the mud.

Point is, when you’re stuck, your best friend at the moment is the guy who gets you out, regardless of what he drives.

Even if it’s a Land Rover. :P

My buddy with is 100 series Land Crusier never lets me pull him out when he gets stuck and always winches himself out. I mean it’s not like I walk up to him with a shit eating grin and a video camera and say “Need a hand?” No wait, that’s exactly what I do...
